Native Shampoo Redesign

2023

This product design project focuses on reimagining shampoo packaging for Native, a brand known for its clean, environmentally conscious personal care products. The goal was to design a sustainable, compact, and user-friendly shampoo and conditioner bottle that also functions as a scalp massager. The final solution enhances both usability and eco-impact, offering a smarter and more responsible approach to daily hair care.

Traditional shampoo packaging presents several flaws: excessive plastic use, bulky forms that make travel inconvenient, and poor product usability that leads to waste. Native, a brand that emphasizes plant-based ingredients, carbon neutrality, and recyclable materials, provided the ideal platform for a design solution that prioritizes both environmental and user needs.

The redesigned product addresses common consumer frustrations by introducing a bottle that holds ten shampoo pods, replacing liquid contents to avoid overuse and waste. The structure integrates a hole through the center that doubles as a scalp massager, encouraging circulation and adding a tactile self-care benefit during use. This concept is intended for everyday routines but is also travel-friendly, minimal, and user-inclusive.

  • The project began with identifying the key flaws in current packaging:
    • Traditional bottles contribute to plastic waste
    • Hard to squeeze or finish product fully
    • Inconvenient for travel
    • Bulk leads to excess production, consumption, and disposal

  • From there, the design direction focused on two innovative changes:
    • 2-in-1 dispenser that functions as both shampoo container and scalp massager
    • Replaces traditional liquid with 10 pre-portioned pods to reduce waste and simplify usage
    • Through-center opening allows product to be dispensed while massaging scalp

  • Target Audience
    • Designed for universal use, inclusive of all hair types, ages, and routines
    • Especially suited for those seeking eco-conscious, space-saving alternatives for home and travel

  • Brand Alignment
    • Native’s brand values of health, sustainability, and simplicity guided every decision
    • Keywords like recyclable, clean, and minimal shaped the final visual direction

  • Design Development
    • Early sketching focused on balancing function with ergonomic form
    • Final concept combines soft organic curves with a center opening for flow and grip
    • Materials and finishes imagined as clean, matte, and recyclable

  • Prototyping and Visualization
    • Final model includes staged product renders and views from multiple angles
    • Visual language remains consistent with Native’s minimal branding and calming aesthetic

The redesigned Native bottle offers a thoughtful balance between sustainability and user benefit. It:

  • Reduces plastic waste through a pod system
  • Adds value with an integrated scalp massager
  • Improves portability for on-the-go consumers
  • Aligns with Native’s identity as a clean, plant-based, climate-conscious brand

This project demonstrates how sustainable design can extend beyond materials, by reconsidering form, behavior, and the tactile relationship between product and user.
